Marshall Merritt was born on August 28, 1904. For many years he maintained a studio in Willits, California. While his studio was located in Willits, he spent as much as four months each year painting the landscapes and seascapes of the Monterey Peninsula. An impressionist painter, he specialized in oil renditions of the California coast.

During his career he exhibited at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, the Mendocino County Fair, the Artist's Guild of America in Carmel, California, the Los Gatos Art Association, and various Galleries on the Monterey Peninsula and in Northern California. In 1955 he presented his works at a solo exhibition at the Artist's Guild of America in Carmel.

In the 1950's he moved his studio to Los Gatos, California. He was a member of the Artist's Guild of America and the Los Gatos Art Association, among others. For a period of several years during the mid to latter part of the 1950's he served as the Vice President of the Los Gatos Art Association.
