Another article frequently seen at Pueblo ceremonial dances is the dance sash. The old sashes in museum collections were hand-woven and brocaded in a style known as “Hopi brocade.” This technique is a form of soumak weaving in which the weft threads are wrapped around specific warps as they move from side to side. This technique produces a densely woven geometric pattern.
Today, people rarely weave dance sashes. Instead, embroiders use a decorative technique that replicates the effect of the Hopi brocade and fills the void caused by the loss of the earlier textile technique. (Source: SAR Design and Technique)
